Johka – The river

The name of Johka Oy comes from the Northern Sámi word ´johka´, the Finnish equivalent of which is ´joki´. Johka and the river are the oldest words describing nature in both languages, and the word also has its own meaning in the story of Johka.

Johka’s accommodations (Arctic Villas) are located along the northern rivers or near them. Villa Vuosku is located in Enontekiö at the confluence of the Könkämäeno Joki and Vuoskujoki rivers. Villa Syväjärvi is located near the wilderness lake Syväjärvi, Villa Saananjuuri and Villa Pikku Saana are located near Kilpisjärvi.

Johka’s experiences (Arctic Activities) are also often organized at northern rivers or near on the banks of the northern rivers, such as Pello, in the Tornionjoki watershed, on the shores of Lake Moinajärvi. The name of the company was also invented on a trip north of Karesuvanto, passing Hietajohka, Hietajoki river.
“Johka‘ river ’, a northern Sámi word whose equivalents are known from all Sámi languages, e.g., Inari Sámi juuhâ, Skolt Sámi jokk, Southern Sámi johke. The word appears as a common afterword in the name of both small and large rivers.
